I talked to two guys and one said that I should put the spray foam in the attic and the otehr said it would be a bad idea because the attic couldnt breath. Who is right?
I don't think an attic needs to breathe. If you put the spray foam insulation in the attic (on the rafters, I assume), then you should start seeing an immediate benefit -- especially in the summer. Think about it this way. When the sun warms up your attic, it doesn't cool down right away. So in the evening, it's like having an electric blanket on top of the house while your a/c unit is trying to cool things down. If the attic doesn't get too hot in the first place, you don't have to cool it down later.
Attics need to breath. The install of foam in the space between the rafters as long as it is properly sealed and NO space for condensation to form will work, but the cost involved in getting the foam into the space along the eaves is difficult at best. Also the amount of foam that can be placed in there is also critical. If you do not have enough R value the heat will transfer into the open attic space and then like Gemini said, the attic will be hot long into the evening. Also this will shorten the life span of the roof shingles as the roof will retain heat longer thus drying out the shingles.
Stick with the itchy stuff on the floor.
