We have hard water and have looked into softners but we feel uncomfortable about what it will do to the environment since we live by a river. Our water comes from a municipal well. We've read info on using magnets and wonder if it really works. Our shower door frames had to be replaced because of hard water and we can't get ALL of the hard water streaks off the glass in the shower either. It never looks clean. We just re-did our entire shower (tile included) and I won't use it until we do something with our water. We've thought to use a softner on the hot water on a very low setting and use magnets on the cold line so we can drink it. We worry about the sodium level in the softened water for drinking. Any suggestions?

Magnets may attract ferromagnetic particles, but that is probably not what you have in the water. Why not use a whole-house filter? I installed one after 40 years without. It makes a big difference in the water quality.
