I have a one story on concrete slab. I would like to change my flooring to wood but need to control the temp of the floor. Does anyone know of anyway to do this without using radiant or electric heating pads? If these are the only methods, can someone suggest something that a do-it-yourselfer can handle.
The only way to control the slab temp is to heat it with radiant method. If your concerned about DYI do not be. Many of the suppliers of electical radiant heat have systems that a do it your selfer can do. Remember you do not place the radiant heat on the entire floor. Only where you would be walking. Putting it under the couch or places where furniture would be placed is useless. So costs are not going to be that bad. Other then that the only other options you have is to use a laminate floor with a thin layer of foam under it. the foam is not used as protection against cool, it softens the feel of the floor but will help a little.Very little. Or lay plastic down, fasten sleepers on the floor, then foam between and fasten the wood down over that.

Home Depot sells kits you can purchase to install yourself. Check out their flooring dept. I also assume you can get them from lowes as well. Also chack on the web. There are many companies that sell these systesms and will be more then helpfull if you contact them.
