The house is about 85 years old with an attic and a crawl space underneath. I have checked for water under the house and cannot find any. The smell gets into everything the furniture, clothes everything and I don't know how to get rid of it. It seems to have penetrated the wood, walls and everything in the house. I have replaced the insulation in the attic. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting rid of this smell.

Start with the crawlspace.

Is there are dirt floor? If so it should get sealed with 6 mil plastic vapor retarder material to stop ground water vapor from entering your home.

Does your crawlspace leak?

Take steps to eliminate water penetration.

Sounds like a mold problem. A dirt crawl space should be covered with a medium 6 mil poly. I'd suggest to get a mold inspection from a qualified mold inspector. If you don't know of one, go to www.iaqa.org or you can link it from my web site at www.ripbugs.com and go to the mold link. Or feel free to email me at john@ripbugs.com Good luck

Unfortunately you have water getting into your home somehow. Once you find the source you can eliminate your problem. This however can be challenging. Search every possible place where water could be starting with pipes, drains, even if ground around your foundation is graded wrong, you could be getting water. Your best bet is to get a mold inspector. You can go to MLSTesting.com and find valuable info and links. Good Luck
