Hi Lindy...you dont want to put a latex based paint over an oil base finish...it will eventually peel. Stain is not a proper prime coat. I would apply a prime coat useing a product such as Zinsers Primer(adheres to glossy surfaces)to the siding before you apply a latex exterior paint. You can even have your paint store tint the primer to the color of your final finish color.

I ask this question because I was told by a paint store salesperson if the original stain has been on the house for many years then a latex based coating would stick to the siding. I am certain that a good primer coat will extend the life of any paint job, even if you are covering oil with latex or oil with oil.You get what you pay for!
Always us a oil base primer over oil base if you are going with a latex paint I have been painting for 15 years and you never paint a latex over oil with out priming it in a oil base primer.This is what you do call a painter in your town ask him about painting a latex over oil with latex primer he will tell you we dont mind answering questions .good luck
