I have a hole about 8 inches in diameter under the roofing shingles above a gutter. The wood around it is rotten and there appears to be some mold. Does anyone know if this is a patching job or an entire roof job (which I cannot afford right now)? How many estimates do I need? I want to get something done before it gets cold and the water causes my dining room ceiling to go.
I just had the board under the gutter replaced because it was rotten in a lot of spots and thought I inspected the area in question, but apparently not high enough onto the roof.
Thank you.

Yes, it can be patched. They would have to remove enough shingles to be able to cut back the rotted sheathing to a pair of rafters (or more). Then they fit in a new section of sheathing, and apply underlayment and shingles. If it's in a place that's very visible, they can remove shingles from some place that isn't, and patch the area with those so they match, and then replace the "stolen" shingles with new ones, if they can't save the ones they removed from the patch area.

Thank you very much. You would not believe the things I have heard about this hole. The last guy who came by said just what you did and quoted a very reasonable price if I purchase the materials and have them here for him. You're a lifesaver.
