French doors are a reasonable alternative, because they cost very little more than sliding doors, but 8 inches is a LOT to expect to cut off standard French doors. I would try Marvin (window and door manufacturer) because they will manufacture almost anything custom. Expect about a 40 to 50 percent upcharge, though, for a custom size. Your local lumberyard should be able to arrange for the doors. Forget the "big box" stores. Question? Is is out of the question to modify the structure so that you can use 6'-8" doors?

Thank you Richard! I am afraid that the roof line will not permit the addition of 8 inches without adding crazy looking dormers. But that is an excellent suggestion. The front slider is a roof deck. Picture a 6/12 front roof and a 10 foot cutout in the center. 10 feet in is the slider. Prior owners <shrug>. I am figuring out how to clean the dead leaves under the decking material (as it rots above my first floor). Back slider is off the back roof with a 4/12 pitch. I suspect the prior owners added the second floor never figuring on someone 6 foot walking upstairs
