I will be building a 6' x 8' trellis. Instead of using pressure treated wood (due to expense & weight) I will be using pine. I was told that I should seal the wood before staining. Does anybody have any suggestions on what sealer I should use....any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!dcarp12003@yahoo.com

I would suggest going to your local paint store and explain your project to them..they will be able to advise you as to which sealer would best meet your need, there are many. I would also consider and weigh the cost of maintaining your trellis to assure it will still be standing through the years. Unless you stay on top of and maintain the sealed finish of a pine structure it will eventually succumb to the elements. If weight is an issue you may want to consider a more water tollerant species of wood like cypress or redwood. And make sure any wood in contact with the ground be treated or thoroughly sealed. Hope this helps...have fun!
