I have begun looking into replacing my drafty windows. I have 4 estimates that range from 1200.00-9800.00. What is a good window type/company? I'm so confused with all of the choices and desparity of price. Thanks for your help!
How many windows? And what are the window types and manufacturers that the varios bidders are proposing to use? Are they ALL providing windows built specifically for each opening, or atre they changing the wimdow openings to suit standard window sizes>
The average house has about 20 windows. If they are normal size, I would budget about $500 per window for a good quality window and a careful installation. That makes the $9,800 guy look pretty good, and the $1200 guy look pretty bad, if you ask me.

were are you from is first ? but 1200 is way to low, 60$ per window dont even pay for the glass. are they ofering single hung, double hung,e-glass, argon gas, clear glass are all ?s to be asked feel free to e-mail me and id be glad to help you in the process bigbossman1969@yahoo.com Tim; Rock Creek contractor service inc.
We are also looking at replacement windows. Have Hurd where the seals are beginning to fail- the Hurd are wood, double hung, some speciality as well. Have a total of 32 windows, including new front and patio doors. Just had a quote from Andersen Renewal that was full replacement (not insert)and allowed for 11 windows with tempered glass because of they go to the floor. Quote of $50K with a $5000 discount so price is $45K, doors were @9500 of the total. Seems really high, but it is our first quote so don't know. Who else should we be looking at for comparable windows etc.
Perhaps you are over-reacting. Did you check with Hurd about any warranty on the glass seals? Is there anything wrong with the windows themselves? Or is the problem only some seal failures?
Why not simply replace the failed glass assemblies?
It sounds like you have some very large windows, so the price could be considerable for each one. A rule of thumb is that replacement of a window should cost about double the price of the window, one half being the window itself, and the oither half being labor.
They may be figuring new trim for each window also. There is no description of the kind of trim you have, but it, too, can be expensive.
The cost averages out to $1183 per window opening. Using the rule of thumb, that would indicate a cost per window alone of about $590, not unreasonable for a very large window.
