first time diy job. any tips?

I assume your job is done by now. I am not sure what specifically you are wanting to know. You need to start the bottom course with either 2 layers of shingles or a spacer board along the bottom. We used treated 2x6's and ripped strips from them about 3/8 thick (as thick as your siding) along the bottom edge to hold the first course out. You can use a chalk line to set your shingles to make sure your reveal is the same all the way accross a course of siding. Maked sure you use pieces so that a solifd shicngle on the top course covers the joints of the bottom course.
