I have a house that has asbestos siding. We are looking to get the GAF replacements. However, my main question is HOW to replace them. The current shingles overlap, and there are nails that go through both where they overlap.

When trying to remove the broken shingles I end up cracking the good shingle above it which is fine.

How can I repair these effectively without damaging the good shingles.

And also, how do you nail them back together without them cracking, these things seem to be so fragile.

Thanks.

I've had limited success clipping the nail heads; none at all trying to pull them out. There usually is enough play that you can press against the shingles enough to nip off the heads, then pull out the rest of the nail after removing the old tile. The truly hard part is putting in the replacement tiles without removing them all the way to the top. Maybe some liquid nails or something?? I can't say since I've never tried it, but I wouldn't hesitate to on my own house. If you're nailing on the new ones, though, just don't hit the nail that very last time, because that is the one that always breaks them.

La Marlowe, is pretty right on this. clip the heads, We use needle nose to pull the nail out.

When replacing them. We drill tiny holes into the shingles and then re-nail, Like Marlowe, said that last hit can crack them however.

However do not use any liquid nails. This will prevent the shingles from expanding when they get hot. This for sure will crack them.
