We recently moved into a rock house in Oklahoma. There is a wood add-on enclosed porch. I'm wondering if there is any harm in putting some type of glossy seal over the existing natural rock and grout that is on the interior side of the porch. If there is no problem doing it, does anyone have any suggestions on what to use? Is polyurtherene gloss ok to use?

I'm trying to make the enclosed porch more attractive and increase our living space for overnight guests (people, not animals) Wink.

Question: what is unattractive about natural stone? Depending on a lot of factors, moisture trying to escape from the stone might drive the coating off the wall in places, and then what? Then you either have a mess or a constant repair nuisance.

Thanks for the very good advice, Richard. I was thinking about just giving the room a more indoors look. The rock is attractive, but the grout is rough and unsightly.

Since there is a lot of humdity in this area, it is probably a good idea to just leave it as it is, to prevent mold, etc...you think?

Thanks again.

I think. A gloss finish on the rock may deepen its colors, but it sure won't look natural. An alternative would be to simply frame a wall in front of it and hide it. That wouldn't be expensive, and could be easily removed in the future if you or someone else wanted the stone back.
