Question: what is unattractive about natural stone? Depending on a lot of factors, moisture trying to escape from the stone might drive the coating off the wall in places, and then what? Then you either have a mess or a constant repair nuisance.

I think. A gloss finish on the rock may deepen its colors, but it sure won't look natural. An alternative would be to simply frame a wall in front of it and hide it. That wouldn't be expensive, and could be easily removed in the future if you or someone else wanted the stone back.
