We were trying to update our brick exterior with a mortar wash. We were told by aa builder to use a mortar and water mix, make the mix very watery and apply with a brush. We did. Although we did not realize when the mortar was wet, the mix had a lot more coverage than we intended. Many bricks were completely covered. It looked more like a bad paint job. We tried a watery mix. Same problem and more messy. Less water and much of the mortar comes off. We have tried to clean the brick with TSP & power wash, but much stain remains- mow it looks like a weathered, really bad paint job. Reddissh/orange brick with white stains. Help! We have to do something to the brick. Does anyone know the mixture recipe (water to mix) fot the mortar wash? Any application instructions. I would like to avoid painting.
Thanks. MG

Mortar wash?? Heavens! Paint the brick with a solvent-type acrylic coating (Modac is one brand) and forget about it for 15 or 20 years.

Thanks. As I said, I'm trying to avoid painting the brick. We were trying to soften the multti-shade look.
