We have very limited income. I have very nice costom made cabinets that are 20 years old and are just now starting to loose some refinishing. The kitchen is small and we need more cabinets, new counter tops and updated knobs, etc. We want to refinih the cabinets, like the finish we have now and want to add smaller cabinets on top of the old ones so they will go all the way to the ceiling. The cabinets are all solid maple with the light pickled finish but the new cabinetts at the top do not need to have the same style of doors as we are thinking maybe doors with a glass insert to them. My question is: How do you find someone/ complany who can do this for us or can we just order ready made cabinets with doors to fit this design or get ready made unfinished cabinets or door so all with match and we can do this ourselves? Appreciate any help or suggestions.
A good custom cabinetmaker should be able to match anything you have. You're not likely to find such small cabinets ready made anyway. A custom cabinetmaker will be able to produce any style door you like.

What about a DIY for the kitchen using Ikea cabinets. Does this type of installation have pitfalls? I was thinking of using an ebook like the one below as a guide.
From what I have seen, Ikea cabinets are not designed for the long haul. You can find much better quality elsewhere, from a kitchen specialist, or a custom cabinetmaker.

Richard is right about IKEA. We had some in our last house and we were forced to replace them. I had a lot of luck with Walzcraft Cabinet Doors. Hope you find what you are looking for, best of luck!
