Originally we were going to put down a tile floor while remodeling our kitchen, but are now considering cork. A little more money, but less work. The only question I can't find an answer to....if we put down a floating floor; at one end of the kitchen, we have a 5" step down into the family room. This step is the width of the kitchen (about 11') and since I'm required to leave a 3/8" gap around the perimeter of a floating floor, what do I do at the step? I would expect to install a wood bull-nose, but I can't leave a gap between the bull-nose and the cork flooring planks. At the walls the gap is covered with a baseboard, but what do I do at the step?

I had exactly the same problem. Simply run the bullnose through a shaper (or, alternatively, run over it with a router) to take a half-inch wide groove off the bottom/back (facing the flooring) so that the floor can run up under it.....and still have space for the required expansion. Let me know if you want a picture, and I'll make one up and send it to you.michaelscott@cogeco.ca
