I'm preparing to lay ceramic tile in my kitchen. There is linoleum currently covering the space. Can I place 1/4 inch board (subfloor) over the linoleum or must I remove it before putting down the new subflooring????

Thanks

The 1/4" underlayment you're talking about, I hope, is cement board?

As for going over the lino, I would strongly suggest you remove not only the lino, but the 1/4" underlayment that's most likely underneath it.

Check the following web page for some interesting reading:

If you're thinking of using 1/4" luan for any part of a tile installation, YOU'RE WRONG.

Remove the linoleum and luan underneath it as Bill said, then Install you're 1/4" backerboard, whether it be CBU, Hardi, DensShield, or the like. Then tile away.
