I'm in the middle of tiling a my kitchen floor and have a question about whether or not to tile where the cabinets are going.

I've prepped the floor with the cement board underlayment an taped and mortared the seems. Very sturdy.

I've heard conflicting reports from others who do this work. The cabinet maker says tile the entire floor, cabinets go on top of the tile. A guy that does this work puts the cabinets on the subfloor and tiles up to the cabinets (the area where the stove and fridge go will get tiled).

The one guy says placing the cabinets on subfloor is more sturdy (Note: granite counter tops will be used) and obviously cheaper since you would use less tile and no border would be needed around the base of the cabinets.

The cabinet maker says the higher end homes get the entire kitchen tiled. I guess this is better if you like changing your kitchen configuration every x number of years. But, I don't plan on changing the kitchen.

Thoughts??

Thanks in advance...

Either method is acceptable providing you have enough clearance to swap out the dishwasher and/or under counter mini refridgerators once the countertop is installed. Another consideration which is more cosmetic would be your tolerance for the possibility that the stove height will not end up flush with the counter (either on the initial install or a future swap out)

As Wolfguy said, it's either or. But if you install the cabinets first, make sure they install plywood to account for the thickness of the tile. Being that the cement board is already in, my suggestion would be to tile the whole thing. It'
ll be much easier, being that you won't have to cut them all in, and the cutting that you do against the walls will be covered for the most part. Also, it'll be a much cleaner look afterward.

Keep in mind that if you don't tile where cabinets are going, you'll have to be careful that you don't create a clearannce issue for something like an under counter dishwasher, and that your range will set at a different height than your counter top.
