My house was built in 1976. We have a foyer that has a beautiful but "dirty looking" slate floor. It looks clean from a distance but when you take the time to actually look at it it has this yellow stained (i think stained from traffic and age) clear coat that is chipping off. I have tried everything...oh yes EVERYTHING -- probably way to many things that should never touch a slate floor -- trying to strip this off.I have seen companies that strip/buff/reseal slate but unfortunately none in a 100mile radius of me. I have even called commerial comp that do it locally but on a contract with large offices, all to no avail. Where do i go from here? Lowes and Home depot are stupid cause i NEVER get a consistant answer or solution....except to replace it and that theirs are on sale this week.... ugh! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. ...Amy

I would try two places. One being a good quality paint store that sells chemicals for stripping the clear coat placed on top of the slate and or a good quality tile store that sells slate tiles as they me be able to send you in the right direction for help. It sounds like you had polyurathane poured on the floor to seal it. Sort of like the stuff they put on the old looking wood tables to give them that glass look. Quite often this stuff yellows as a reaction to floor cleaners. Depending on how large of a floor your looking at, you may be better off tearing it out and starting again. But check with those stores first as they most likely could point you in the right direction.

I heard of something called SkimStone and am looking into it, maybe you want to google it too?
