When I flush my toilet in my upstairs bathroom, my walls sing a horrible groaning song. If the kids are running the bath water at that time, the walls don't sing until the bath water is turned off. THEN it belts out its melody for a good 10-15 seconds. It does this every time the toilet is flushed.

Why is my house practicing for Halloween?

This problem is common in older houses and I have found that installing an "air hammer" solves this. An air hammer is normally located at a washer hook up or at the water heater. This is simply a piece of pipe that extends above the hook up about 18" and is capped off holding air in it. This acts like a shock absorber for the water. It also prevents excess strain on the water supply to the rest of the house. Contact a local plumber for more detailed information. This is a very easy fix for your problem.

There may be another solution. You may be experiencing fill valve chatter which sounds like "moaning". Replace the guts of your float valve or the entire assembly, if necessary, inside the tank of your toilet.

iirc the term for your condition is a water hammer. Try this first as it may be a simple solution. Turn on all your water faucets full blast and let them run for a good few minutes. This suggestion came a mechanical engineer friend of mine. Apparently water sometimes builds up in the water hammer arrestors over time and this act will allow them to be drained.

Not sure if it will help your situation but at least it's a simple and non-costly attempt.

Good luck.

This is something that occured sporadically with our home. One of the old-timers at Home Depot recommended changing out the mechanisms in both toilets which we did. Problem solved -- ghostly moaning disappeared.
