So, I have a closet that is next to a shower - this week I found an area of 5x14in with mold in the closet. Do I need to test for mold before I start remediation?Given the small mold are - what do I do with the clothes hanging in the closet?

I had a company come and gave me a quote of $900 to remove the mold. Is this a fair price?

Thanks

Does anybody in your house have breathing problems, asthma or severe allergies? Anybody have an organ transplant or cancer treatment? if you answered no to the above, then mix a 10% bleach/water solution and clean off the mold. Wash the clothing, or have it dry cleaned as appropriate. When that is done look at the closet and see if you have moisture getting to the drywall from the shower. You may also have a cold spot in the closet that is allowing moisture to condense on the wall surface. Find the moisture source and correct it. Don't get caught in the mold remediation trap. If no-one in your house has any of the health problems mentioned above then you can use the $900.00 for something more useful, like maybe installing a vent fan or caulking the shower.

$900 is a low number, although I am not a remediator, I actually help with giving protocols to these companies.

You need to find out what they will do.

Also, did they find the source of the problem and fix it. THis is HUGE!!!

Because you may have a future problem after paying for the remediation.

For your clothes, get them cleaned professionally.

Be sure to seal the closet with blue tape and visqueen so the spores don't expand.

If you need help, go to YouTube and check this video on what Mold Remediation Video supplies you need for your mold remediation.

Go to http://www.epa.gov/mold/index.html

This resource is free, has all the latest information on mold cleanup and if a home owner themselves should do this.

What accreditation do you have Maurice if you write protocol on remediation?
As I always am looking for folks who can provide 2nd opinions on projects that we work on.

Adding a bathroom vent that vents out throught the roof or soffit and using it are needed if there is none.
Changing the door to a luvered door will also help out with air flow.
If this is on an outside wall then it could be no one installed insulation in this area or there's a over sized hole in the bottom plate for a wire or plumbing chase that can be filled with expanding foam from below the floor.
If this is just surface mold and the sheetrock is not all punky then just spraying on some bath and tile cleaner will take care of the surface mold. But if the wall is punky then the sheetrock will need to be cut out to see what's going on behind the wall.

Where all stupid, just in different subjects.
