Getting ready to redo my master bath. I picked up a new tub but I am unsure if it will be supported by the present framing. Without doing any of the rip out yet, the best that I can determine is that the joists are 1 1/2 X 9 (actual), 16" on center. The tub I am taking out is a simple 5' builders tub, steel with porcelain coating. The tub I bought is an American Standard 7236L, 3' x 6' drop in. The new tub holds 111 gallons of water (doubt it will ever be fully filled) and requires a 57 lb/sq ft support. The tub that is there now runs along with the beams, not across them, but seems to be on a built up 2 x 4 frame (across the joists) covered with plywood base (a sort of roman tub setup). Will I be able to install this new tub or will I have to re-structure the beams to support the new weight? This bathroom is on the third (top) floor. Any thoughts? Thanks. Cam
