I live in south central PA, and the charts tell me that they recommend more insulation than what I currently have in my attic (1-layer, approx. 5" of 6" in depth).

With the impending electric deregulation here in PA, prices are projected to jump 30%.

I'm upset with myself for missing the sales/rebates/etc. of a month ago, and now I hate to pay retail for insulation.

But if the prices are going up *that* much, should I suck it up and pay retail *now*? Or should I wait until next spring/fall when the sales/rebates come around again?

I figure I need at least 1,000 sq. ft. I was looking at R-19 and R-30 unfaced batt. R-19 will cost me around $500, R-30 around $800.

1) How quickly do you think that I will recoup my investment, in light of the upcoming price increases?

2) That may help me to determine whether to go with the R19 or R30.

3) I also dislike blown insulation because if there is ever a problem with it (gets wet, etc.), it would seem to be a lot harder to clean it up than the fiberglass. True or false? Other considerations? Price (as compared to fiberglass), have to pay for installation or rent a blower and know what you're doing, etc.

Thanks.

Your region of Pennsylvania requires at minimum R-38 in the attic to meet State minimum energy Code.

Add the R-38 now in the form of rolled batts and be done with it.

You should be able to pay for the cost of the insulation in 5 years or so.
