We bought what was originally an old stone school house which we are renovating and adding to. The roof pitch is approximately 10/12 on the 20 x 30 ft. building. We are adding a 12 x 20 ft. addition to the rear left side and keeping the original roof line on the front. We would like the roof lines of the addition to look like they were meant to be there. On the front part of the addition there will be an entrance with a door, while the back section will be a bedroom. We are thinking of centering the roof line to accomodate the addition. Any thoughts or ideas on what would look good would be appreciated, as we are hoping to start this right away.
It isn't clear how or where the addition connects with the original building, or what is meant by "keeping the original roof line" or "centering the roof line to accomodate the addition". We don't know which way the ridge runs on the original building. Therefore, it's difficult to be of much help, missing all that information. Maybe you could clarify or post a sketch.

If the gable ends are the same, keeping the same roof pitch would be the best. Even if you offset the bedroom in the rear to one side or another the pitch being the same would blend in better. However if you turn the structure and have the side wall face the old gable end then depending on the size of the addition in relation to the current structure, you may want to change the pitch.
I would suggest that if you want to keep it looking the same or at least blend in with that time period. Check with the local historic society as they may have some ideas or photos that will work for you.

Thankyou for your responses. We think this is what we'll do (keep the same roof pitch) as someone added a closed in porch and dormer which really looks out of place. So we'll tear all this off. We were going to post a picture but doesn't seems like we can on here, but it sounds like you were able to get the idea of what we had in mind. Thanks again.
Also remove the old siding where the additions going and have the new foundation come out level with the old one. Then reside the whole thing so the exposure lines come out the same.
Where all stupid, just in different subjects.
