We were considering putting in a ridge vent onto our old addition. We had a contrector come and look at it and wonder if they had installed baffles when they originally installed the roof. The entire addition is just a bedroom, there is no attic....just peaked cathedral ceilings. Ideas?
The only reason for baffles is if they installed the same thickness insulation as the debth of the roof/ceiling rafters. Meaning if they used 2x8 rafters and 9" of insulation then baffles would be needed to allow for proper air flow out of the top of the roof. If they did not use baffles then installing a ridge vent is useless. The only way you can tell if they did not not is to cut a hole either in the ceiling and feel around to see if they did, or cut out a small ridge area, (best way) and see if the baffles are there. Also do not forget that you also need soffit or fascia vents to allow for the air to move into the cavities and out through the ridge. If you have a knee wall area that is accessable you can also see if these baffles are in place or not. If there is less insulation in thickness then the debth of the rafters and a air space exists then no need for baffles and the ridge vent will work then.
