Are Design Revisions a Waste of Paper?

Websites created for design companies show off the company’s portfolio, of course. Whether it’s the design of a modern building, kitchen, shoe or couture dresses; these companies want their best work on display. But when I think if the process it takes to perfect these designs, a lot of paper comes to mind. The drawing of the initial concept, faxing it to colleagues for their input, sending multiple pages to their clients by mail or fax, redrawing it to meet their clients and colleagues specifications, etc. uses a lot of trees. Although, some of these companies claim to be green, they continue to use the old fashion, wasteful paper process.

I asked a friend of mine (an interior designer), “With all the technology available to us, why not send, draw, revise and view those designs on the web?” She said she send emails of floor plans to her clients (half of whom don’t know what an attachment is) but they usually print them off and fax the revisions back to her. So I did a little research and found Internet applications that help this cause. I found a couple of companies that provide image annotation which will prevent the faxing of revisions but they seemed pretty user-unfriendly with too many functions, and you have to download a big software packages which eats up space on your computer.

I wanted to find something simple and web-based and found DezynePad (pronunciation?). It’s a fairly new company, it’s web-based, provides design uploading, viewing, and easy annotation without software or downloading. Basically dezynepad.com provides management and electronic design review and they will add their service to your website. So here’s to green websites, and saving paper in the design industry!!
