We are upgrading our 10 year old home with the idea of selling when conditions are better. We have upgraded kitchen (granite, stainless steel) and master bath (cherry drawer fronts, brushed nickel hardware)but need to know what to do about the brass hardware on the doors - lots of hinges and knobs would need to be replaced. Do we need to go with the brushed nickel? Would it be possible to spray paint the hinges and knobs and not look tacky? What do remodelers do in this situation?

The hinges can be sprayed if you take them off and clean and prep them properly. The knobs will need to be replaced as they will wear down quite fast if you paint them.

What you need to change is the side of the door that is visible from the kitchen/bath areas with the nickel finish. You do not need to change the side that faces the other parts of the home that still have the brass look. If the hinges face inside the kitchen/bath then they need to be painted or changed. If the doors swing out of the rooms then no need as the hinges are facing the other rooms. The door knobs only need to be changed as well to the side facing the finished rooms. Otherwise the nickel finish will not go with the other doors/window hardware that is not the same color.

As far as doing this. Sure you can do it. But you will get nothing in return in the cost of doing so. Only your own feelings that everything matches.
