We had a contractor renovate out garage into a bedroom and bath. He used t-11 siding on the outside and built brick columns on the corners with the mortar and bricks directly against the t-11 siding. Our county is under the IRC 2003, does anyone know where I can find if that is okay within the code. It doesn't make sense to me, but I can't get it changed unless I can produce the applicable code violation.

Not sure about the code on this one, but I can tell you if he place the brick directly over the siding. It needs to come down unless he left at least a one inch gap behind the brick and T-11 plywood. Placed proper asphalt paper, installed drainage weep holes at the sill level near the ground with flashing behind. The brick is laying on a foundation of some sort.

Oh yea, got the permits to build it in the first place. Sounds like he did not. Then this question would not be here in the first place.

Go to www.bia.org for more information about installing brick.

Thanks, I very much appreciate the information. And yes he did get the permits, he is a state licensed home builder. Just proves what a backwards state we really are in South Carolina. The information you gave me is great and I can use it, but this is a con artist we made the mistake of doing business with, and if anyone knows the page number I can find the applicable code for this in the IRC 2003, Please let me know.
Thanks

IRC 2003, Page 210, FIGURE R703.7 shows what you want, and shows pretty much what Home Care Club stated. Good luck.

Thanks, I have searched for a long time to get that answer. You will never know how helpful that is to me.
