We signed a contract to have our kitchen remodeled in july. the contractor demolished our kitchen in early August .We paid a good amount for them to start building the cabinets. After many delays they delivered and installed the frames of the cabinets.
No doors, no hardware, no extras that were to be included. Then we had to make another payment per the contract. Soon after that their phone was temporarily put out of service by the phone company. And upon visiting their shop we found the building was up for lease and most of the place was being emptied. They have no forwarding address or phone number. We thought we hired a reputable company, we got their name from a link
we found on the HGTV WEBSITE. Can anyone give us some advise.

Ouch,
Sorry to hear of your problem.

If they went bankrupt. Call a lawyer

Tip. Don't know how much this will help?
Call you local building inspector. If you live in a place that has one. Lots of time they can give you insight. What happened to the company or the persons. Talk to the town they DB in. Might get info.
Building inspector has a lot more power then some might think. Look at a cancelled check find out what bank they use and see if there is a new address...? Their is a lot of privicy issues with this idea. But might come up lucky?

If Lic contractor you should make some calls and issue a complant against his Lic

I myself got stiffed couple of times by customers. The inspector did what he could for me. But the bankrupt and furclosed one's I lost big. Thank goodness only happened twice in twenty years.

Used a website.... If its not listed as a private .com you can get a lot of contact info from the lic #

http://www.godaddy.com type it in and see what come up for the lic holder

Good luck hope it gave you some ideas.

To noho brian; I agree w/this advice. (are you from a town called Northampton, by any chance???) Anyway, we had a horrible experience w/some siding contractors last summer. The overwhelming advice was to call the Building Inspector. As it was put to us: "You have no idea how much he can make their (the sleazy contractors') lives a living ****!"

In Mass., at least, the contractor needs to be licenced, I'm almost positive, (*gulp*!) before you can recoup anything legally.

My advice would be to check and see if they even HAVE a license! (as on the link given by FlooringCraftsman) One guy who did some sill work for us, was not only unlicensed, but uninsured, since 1997, tho' it said so on his card.

W/the siding guys, they gave us a long list of "satisfied" customers, but they were mostly older ladies or housewives, who probably didn't know what a lousy job these guys did. Contact the BBB and any consumer groups in your area to see if there are complaints.

Even then, you can get stiffed, because most people IN GENERAL don't complain; they just take a beating! I say: go w/your gut feeling. And if they're already arguing w/you and second-guessing you from the start, not showing up or anything shady, get somebody else!
