I need some help here - I have no idea where this stuff came from but it serously feels like a weird horror movie from the 1970s!
The bottom line is that yellow goo/globs started coming out of our sinks/shower/toilet last week. Weird huh? I was expecting either aliens or giant insects.
Here's some of the details: *Our house was built in the 70s *It only came out when we used the COLD water. (Running the hot water didn't cause them.) *the globs actually looked like tiny fish eggs (think cavier but yellow)
The city came out and said that it was probably our hot water heater - but since this was only confined to the cold water (which from my understanding bypasses the heater) that didn't make sense.
by saying the city I assume you have city water not well? What about any treatment systems on the water line? Do you have any plastic pipes in the house? Does it smell, or is it oily.
If its coming from every outlet. It must be starting before any branch lines are split up. That should narrow this down to only a few lines in basement/crawl area. Most likely from outside of home. Unless you changed something in the pipe system. Was there any recent water company actvity within your area in the recent past? Forget the city, if it is city water, get the water company out there and have them test this stuff. Do not bath in it, or attempt to use in anyway until its tested.
Keep us posted. I think its residue from a city pipe repair that was not properly flushed out after they were done.

Have your neighbors seen anything like it or is it peculiar to your house. Since flushing the hydrant seems to have fixed it, it sounds like Home Care Club might be onto something, but I've never seen anything quite like what you describe. The reddish color makes me think of iron, but I have no idea what the yellow globules could be.
I would flush out the hot water heater as well if the problem seems to have gone away. It is fed from the incoming cold water as well so may have a bunch of that stuff settled in the bottom.
