Does anyone have any experience with a salt-free water softener. My cation-style softener has had it and I'm tired of lugging salt and wasting gallons of water with backwashing. There are all kinds of salt-free softeners on the market, from magnetic to catalytic, and everyone of them claims to be the best. My feeling is that if they DID work then the big companies who make the salt-style conditioners would be making salt-free, too. Any thoughts?

I've only ever used the kind that uses salt, but I did a little research for a question posted in another forum, and this was my reply: There are a number of reviews and suggestions here: http://www.allwaterpurification.com/salt-free-water-softener.html I don't know who is running the web site but they don't seem to favor any one particular brand over another. I would still take their advice with a grain of, ahem, salt. There is a very wide variety of opinions out there on these systems. Several I read questioned whether they worked as advertised, or even worked at all.

Home Care Club also posted a response on that thread with some information. It may be under the Mechanical forum, I can't remember.
