I bought this 1939 rancher a year ago. The inspector said a pipe under the house was tilted the wrong way. (they were suppose to fix it. checking that out now.)I am not sure this is related but lately when the washer empties, the water either backs up and out the kitchen drains or runs back out the pipe it is suppose to empty out behind the washer. The water when it comes out of the kitchen sink, smells of sulfur. They are in a joining rooms. help.

I'm afraid your posting may generate more questions than answers, but I'll help if I can. Has the dishwasher ever worked properly since you've been there? If it has, then it may just be a clog causing back pressure. If there really is a pipe running uphill, or another bad installation problem, then that is the logical place to start your repairs.

Once your sure that your drain is actually draining, pour your biggest pasta pot full of boiling water down the sink where the dishwasher empties, being very careful not to burn yourself with water or steam. Watch as it drains and follow it with a good flushing of hot water from the tap. Grease is a very common problem and the very hot water will help, though there may be other issues requiring further drain cleaning. Avoid the chemical cleaners, though and call a professional; they have the tools, the knowledge and the experience to help you.

Other factors may be the grinder on the dishwasher not working properly, improperly installed or internally broken Y where the dishwasher connects to the drain, a stoppage further down the drain line somewhere, or improper venting.

Good luck!!

It sounds like I make sense when I write it. Sorry.
It is my clothes washer that is making the water back up. Does that make a difference. I think a clog like you said may be the problem. No I have not always had this problem. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and call. a plumber, but I feel so defenseless when I have no clue what it is, and you have to believe whatever it is that they tell you

Very common issue. What has happend is the washer drain is starting to plug up with hair, and grease. As the washer pumps the water out faster then the drain can handle it it backs up to the nearest sink. If the pipe is pitched wrong the greasy water from the sink lays in the pipe in that location and begins to gell up. As it does this lint from the washer gets caught on the grease and begins to plug the pipe.
You should go to a home center and purchase the best quality liquid drain cleaner that they have. Not the store brands like liquid plumber. They are ok for at sink clogs but not ones in pipes. This cleaner normally comes in a plastic bottle that is covered with plastic bag. This is an ACID, Its very strong and can burn easily. Wear gloves and eye protection while using this . Read and understand the directions carefully before you use it. If your uncomfortable in doing so. Then get a plumber with a snake.
Pour it down the kitchen drain The whole container. DO NOT put any water in any drain for at least one hour after. So hit the bathroom before you do this. Cover the drain in the sink with a pot cover so if anything comes back up the drain it does not splash onto anything or person.
After at least one hour. Turn on the sink and let the water run for at least 10 min. This should be enough to flush out the pipes. Then once that is done. Turn on the washer and run it through a complete cycle. Then see if it works.
Its not a hard or expensive thing to do. Just becareful so you do not get burnt with the cleaner.

Is this ACID safe for Septic Systems. I would like to clean my pipes from the washing machine. Thanks Becky

The amount of acid your going to use once and a long while will do nothing to harm the septic for a short period of time. IT will loose its concentration once it comes into the tank. Its the continued use of this type of product that will kill off the bacteria that digests the solids within the tank. But in your case this use will not be such an issue.
Once your drain is clear be sure to use a pre-drain filter that can be picked up at most good quality hardware stores in the future so the lint gets trapped in that rather then the pipe which now needs cleaning. It simply fastens on the end of the drain pipe of the washer and sits into the drain pipe within the wall.
The one I suggest using has a removable top this is like the old time canning jars. The metal lever lifts over the top and the inside of the filter can be cleaned without removing the hose from the device. Should cost somewhere around 10 dollars.
